Overview
This bike tour to the hot springs will lead you out of the city heading south into the enormous and beautiful sugar cane fields. You will see entire villages constructed for plantation workers by TPC, The Tanzanian Plantation Company. From lush sugarcane you will begin to move deep into the rural and agrarian life of the local people. Keep a lookout for outstanding views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mawenzi in the distance as you ride alongside fields of corn, wheat, turnips, onions, and bananas. Quaint and tiny villages will appear along the route, as well as herds of cows, goat, and sheep. As you near the hot springs you will spot an oasis of trees, sheltering the refreshing and vibrant waters of Chemka Hot Springs.

Itinerary
In the morning we will get an early start at the One Bike Shop where we will outfit you with a quality mountain bike and helmet. If you desire, there will be time for tea and a chapati at a nearby coffee house. We begin our bike tour to the hot springs with a downhill paved road leading out of the city. When we pass the police checkpoint, a standard point on all main roads in Tanzania, we will begin to move out into the countryside and into the lush sugarcane fields, passing through an enormous plantation owned by TPC. Crossing a river and through the first village, we will travel along dirt and rock packed roads, seeing a different pace of life. Here you will begin to share the road with semi-nomadic Masaai herdsman leading large packs of cattle, sheep, and goats on their way to graze. Curious and friendly children at all points along the route will run to the roadside to greet you. Photo opportunities will abound as the road begins to rise slightly and Boabob trees, impressive termite mounds, and majestic views of the Kilimanjaro mountain range will appear. Eventually we will cross a river with distinct and clear blueish coloring, signaling only a short ride to the Chemka Hot Springs, where an oasis of trees is visible.
Seemingly in the middle of nowhere we will come upon a bubbling oasis of clear, vibrantly colored water with light reflecting off the submerged volcanic rocks. There we will encounter a small restaurant where we will eat lunch and enjoy cold beverages; perhaps several! When the springs are quiet during the first part of the day there are often large groups of Vervet Monkeys climbing through the trees overhead or drinking from the spring. There is a rope swing for the acrobats in the group, as well as inner tubes for rent if you prefer to simply float in the water. To fully enjoy the springs, bring swim goggles to explore underwater. And when you thought it couldn’t get any better, sit in the shallows and let the abundant small and friendly fish tickle and massage your feet, giving you a free pedicure while taking off any dead skin. After a long and relaxing afternoon we will begin to head back along the trail towards Moshi, where we will end our bike tour to the hot springs. At the end of the day you will feel tired, but pleasantly relaxed!
